Giganotosaurus 3 Giganotosaurus was a large carnivorous dinosaur that lived in what is now South America during the late Cretaceous period, approximately 98 to 97 million years ago. It was one of the largest land predators ever to have lived, with an estimated length of up to 13 meters (43 feet) and a weight of up to 8 tonnes (17,600 lbs). It was a theropod, a type of dinosaur that walked on two legs and had a large head with powerful jaws. Its teeth were serrated and curved, and it had a long, stiff tail for balance. Giganotosaurus is closely related to the famous Tyrannosaurus rex, and the two are often compared.
