He was known for his advocacy for the rights and well-being of children, particularly those in need of care and support. Father Flanagan"s work inspired the 1938 movie "Boys Town," in which he was portrayed by the actor Spencer Tracy. Tracy"s performance in the film earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor.
