Jack Torrance The Shining Jack Nicholson 1 Jack Torrance is a fictional character and the main antagonist of Stephen King"s horror novel The Shining (1977). He is portrayed by Jack Nicholson in the 1980 film adaptation of the same name. Torrance is an aspiring writer and recovering alcoholic who accepts a position as the off-season caretaker of the isolated historic Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies. He takes his wife Wendy and son Danny with him to the hotel, where he gradually descends into insanity and attempts to murder his family.
