She is devoted to the memory of Rebecca, Maxim"s late wife, and is cold and unfriendly to the novel"s narrator, who becomes Maxim"s second wife. Mrs. Danvers is described as an imposing woman, tall and thin, with a "face like a wax mask" and a "voice like a death-ray".
