Virgil Tibbs Stuffy Southern Night by Sidney Poitier 3 Virgil Tibbs is a fictional character created by author John Ball in his 1965 novel In the Heat of the Night. He is a black police detective from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who finds himself in a small town in Mississippi while on a business trip. He is soon drawn into a murder investigation and must confront the racism of the town"s white residents. Sidney Poitier portrayed Tibbs in the 1967 film adaptation of the novel, and reprised the role in the 1975 sequel, The Organization.
