Raphael was the son of a painter, and was born at Urbino, in the year 1483. He was a very delicate child, and his father, who was a man of great taste and genius, and a professor of the art, was so fond of him, that he did not send him to school, but taught him himself. He made such rapid progress, that, at the age of twelve, he was able to paint a picture of the Virgin and Child, which was much admired. He was afterwards sent to Florence, to study under the celebrated Perugino. Here he soon surpassed his master, and obtained the patronage of the Medici family. He afterwards visited Rome, where he was patronized by Julius II., who employed him to paint the Stanze, or apartments, in the Vatican. He was also employed to decorate the Loggie, or galleries, in the same palace. The works of this great master are so numerous, that it would be impossible to enumerate them. His pictures are generally distinguished by the beauty of the composition, the grace of the figures, and the excellence of the colouring. He died in the year 1520, in the thirty-seventh year of his age.
