The film stars Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka and Freddie Highmore as Charlie Bucket, alongside David Kelly, Helena Bonham Carter, Noah Taylor, Missi Pyle, James Fox, Deep Roy, and Christopher Lee. The storyline follows Charlie, who wins a contest along with four other children and is led by Wonka on a tour of his chocolate factory. The film was released in the United States on July 15, 2005 by Warner Bros. Pictures and was a critical and commercial success, grossing $475 million worldwide. It was the second adaptation of the novel, preceded by the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. A prequel, titled Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, is currently in development.
