Chinatown 14 Chinatown is a 1974 American neo-noir mystery film directed by Roman Polanski, starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. The film was inspired by the California Water Wars, a series of disputes over southern California water at the beginning of the 20th century. The story is a multi-layered tale of corruption and betrayal set in 1930s Los Angeles. It was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
