The film is about Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald, an Irishman who dreams of building an opera house in the middle of the Amazon jungle. The film was shot in the Peruvian Amazon and in various locations in Germany. The story is based on the real-life events of Peruvian rubber baron Carlos Fitzcarrald. The film was nominated for the Palme d"Or at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival.
