The film was directed by Stephen Sommers and stars Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Marlon Wayans, Dennis Quaid, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The film follows an elite military unit, led by Duke (Tatum) and Ripcord (Wayans), who are forced to team up with the G.I. Joe Team to prevent Cobra, an evil organization led by James McCullen (Quaid), from using a nanotech-based weapon to take control of the world. The film was released on August 7, 2009, and grossed over $302 million worldwide. It received generally negative reviews from critics, who criticized the plot, acting, and CGI effects. Despite the negative reviews, the film was a box office success and spawned a sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which was released in 2013.
