He first appeared in the 1981 novel Red Dragon as a brilliant psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer. The character was portrayed by Anthony Hopkins in the 1991 film The Silence of the Lambs, for which Hopkins won the Academy Award for Best Actor. He also appeared in the films Hannibal (2001) and Red Dragon (2002).
