The film became a major success and was the most watched Disney Channel Original Movie. It was the first to have a theatrical sequel, High School Musical 2, released in 2007. The first film"s success led to the release of a 2006 soundtrack album, a 2007 spin-off film, High School Musical 3: Senior Year, and a 2009 stage production.
