Journey to the West Wu Chengen circa 1592 12 Journey to the West is a Chinese novel written by Wu Chengen in the late 16th century during the Ming Dynasty. It is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. The novel is a fictionalized account of the legendary pilgrimage of the Buddhist monk Xuanzang, who traveled to India during the Tang dynasty in order to obtain Buddhist scriptures. Along the way, he is accompanied by three protectors who help him battle various supernatural creatures.
