Life on Mars-TV series 1 Life on Mars is a British science fiction television series that aired on BBC One from 9 January 2006 to 10 April 2007. The series combines elements of science fiction and police procedural, featuring a police officer from the Greater Manchester Police, Sam Tyler (John Simm), who is transported back in time to 1973 after being hit by a car. The series was produced by Kudos Film and Television, and distributed in the United States by the BBC and in Australia by the Seven Network. It was created by Matthew Graham, Tony Jordan and Ashley Pharoah. The show"s central character is DCI Sam Tyler (John Simm), a detective in the Greater Manchester Police, who, after being hit by a car in 2006, regains consciousness in 1973. Tyler finds himself working for a predecessor of his former police force, the Manchester and Salford Police, in the same division, with the same colleagues. He finds himself trying to solve the same cases, using methods and technology from the 1970s, while dealing with the culture shock of the era. The series also stars Philip Glenister as DI Gene Hunt, a brash, tough, and incorruptible police officer from the old school, and Liz White as WPC Annie Cartwright, Tyler"s colleague, and the only person who knows of his time travel.
