Monkey Grip Helen Garner 1977 7 Monkey Grip is a 1977 Australian drama film directed by Ken Cameron and starring Noni Hazlehurst, Colin Friels, and John Jarratt. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Helen Garner. The film follows Nora (Hazlehurst), a single mother who moves to Melbourne with her young daughter. She meets and falls in love with the free-spirited Javo (Friels), a drug user and musician. The film explores the challenges of their relationship, as well as Nora"s struggles to balance her responsibilities as a mother with her desire for independence. Monkey Grip was well-received by critics, and was nominated for six AFI Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It was also a box office success, grossing over $2 million at the Australian box office.
