The screenplay was written by Ernest Lehman, who wanted to write "the Hitchcock picture to end all Hitchcock pictures". The film was nominated for three Academy Awards and is often cited as one of Hitchcock"s best and most memorable films. The plot centers on an advertising executive, Roger Thornhill (Grant), who is mistaken for a government agent and pursued across the United States by agents of a mysterious organization. He is aided by a wealthy heiress, Eve Kendall (Saint), who helps him to evade his pursuers. The film was released on July 1, 1959, and was a critical and commercial success, becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of 1959. It has been selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
