Platoon- movie 5 Platoon is a 1986 American war film written and directed by Oliver Stone, starring Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, and Charlie Sheen. It is the first film of a trilogy of Vietnam War films directed by Stone, followed by Born on the Fourth of July (1989) and Heaven & Earth (1993). The film, based on Stone"s experience in Vietnam, follows a U.S. Army volunteer (Sheen) who is torn between the ideals of two sergeants (Berenger and Dafoe) as they all participate in the bloody Vietnam War. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing $138.5 million worldwide, and was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor for both Berenger and Dafoe. It won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Sound, and Best Film Editing.
