The title refers to the satanic verses, a group of Quranic verses that allow intercessory prayers to be made to three Pagan Meccan goddesses. The novel was inspired in part by the life of Muhammad and the historical context of the early days of Islam. It was the subject of major controversy and violent protests from Muslims in several countries, some of which were violent and resulted in more than 100 deaths. The British government put Rushdie under police protection. The Satanic Verses received mixed reviews, but was generally praised by critics. It won the 1988 Whitbread Award for Novel of the Year.
