Shekhtel Fyodor Franz-albert 6 May 1845 – 11 April 1902) was a Russian architect who designed some of the most notable buildings in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. He is considered one of the most influential architects of the late 19th century and early 20th century. Shekhtel was born in Moscow in 1845 and graduated from the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1867. He worked in the studios of leading architects such as Alexander Kaminsky and Vladimir Sherwood. He established his own practice in 1875 and quickly became one of the most sought-after architects in the Russian Empire. Shekhtel"s most famous works include the Moscow City Hall, the Hotel Metropol in Moscow, the Grand Hotel Europe in St. Petersburg, and the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. He also designed many private residences for wealthy clients, including the Yusupov Palace and the Yusupov Garden in St. Petersburg. Shekhtel"s style was eclectic, combining elements of Russian, French, and Italian architecture. Shekhtel"s influence on Russian architecture was significant. He was a mentor to many younger architects, and his works inspired many of the buildings that followed in the early 20th century. He was also a leader in the development of the Art Nouveau movement in Russia. Shekhtel died in 1902 at the age of 56.
