Sponge Bob SquarePants-TV series 1 The first season of SpongeBob SquarePants consists of 20 episodes. The season premiered on May 1, 1999 with the episode "Help Wanted" and ended on March 3, 2001 with the episode "Life of Crime". The season follows the adventures of the title character, an anthropomorphic sea sponge named SpongeBob SquarePants, and his various friends in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. The season also sees the introduction of numerous characters, including Squidward Tentacles, Patrick Star, Mr. Krabs, Plankton, Sandy Cheeks, and Pearl Krabs. The season received critical acclaim from media critics and fans. It was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Children"s Program in 2000. The episodes "Band Geeks" and "Graveyard Shift" were nominated for Outstanding Animated Program (for Programming Less Than One Hour) in 2001 and 2002, respectively. The season was also released on DVD in regions 1, 2, and 4 on October 19, 2004.
