The Butterfly Effect- movie 1 "The Butterfly Effect" is a 2004 American science fiction thriller film directed by Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber. The film stars Ashton Kutcher as Evan Treborn, a young man who suffers from blackouts due to traumatic events in his childhood. When he discovers that he has the ability to travel back in time to inhabit his former self during those periods of blackout, he attempts to change the past so that he can improve his current life. However, these changes have unforeseen consequences, hence the title, which refers to the butterfly effect in chaos theory where a small change in one state can result in large differences in a later state. The film explores themes of childhood trauma, memory, and the potential consequences of trying to alter the past.
