The Deer Hunter 1 The Deer Hunter is a 1978 American epic war drama film co-written and directed by Michael Cimino, and starring Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, John Savage, John Cazale, Meryl Streep, and Chuck Aspegren. The film follows a trio of Russian American steelworkers whose lives are changed forever after they are sent to fight in the Vietnam War. The story takes place in Clairton, Pennsylvania, a small working-class town on the Monongahela River south of Pittsburgh, and in Vietnam. The film was a critical and commercial success, and won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Walken), and Best Film Editing.
