The Kings New Dress Hans Christian Andersen 1837 17 Once upon a time there was a King who was very fond of new clothes. He spent all his money on dressing himself up in the finest and most beautiful garments he could find. One day, the King heard of a wonderful new fabric that was so fine and delicate that it was invisible to anyone who was not fit for their position or too stupid to understand its value. The King was very eager to get this fabric and ordered his tailors to make him a suit of clothes from it. When the tailors had finished, the King put on his new suit and stood in front of the mirror to admire himself. But to his surprise, he saw nothing! He was wearing nothing at all! He had been tricked by the tailors, who had taken his money and made him a suit of clothes that was invisible! The King was embarrassed and angry. He declared that anyone who was not fit for their position or too stupid to understand the value of the fabric should be put to death. But then a little child spoke up and said, “But your Majesty, you are wearing the most beautiful suit of clothes. It is made of the finest and most delicate fabric, and it is invisible to those who are not fit for their position or too stupid to understand its value.” The King was so pleased with the child’s wisdom that he pardoned all those who had been sentenced to death.
