E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial 5 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a 1982 American science fiction film directed by Steven Spielberg. Elliott and his siblings help E.T. return to his home planet, while attempting to keep him hidden from the government. The film stars Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote, and Robert MacNaughton, and was written by Melissa Mathison. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $792 million worldwide against its $10.5 million budget. It won four Academy Awards, including Best Original Score and Best Visual Effects. It was also nominated for six other Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor.
