Gollum 10 Gollum is a fictional character from J. R. R. Tolkien"s Middle-earth legendarium. He was introduced in the 1937 fantasy novel The Hobbit, and became an important supporting character in its sequel, The Lord of the Rings. Gollum is a small, slimy creature who lives in the Misty Mountains. He is a Stoor Hobbit of the River-folk, who has been corrupted by the One Ring and lives in a cave beneath the Misty Mountains. Gollum was originally known as Sméagol, but the effects of the Ring had long since taken hold of him, and he became known as Gollum after his habit of making "a horrible swallowing noise in his throat". Gollum"s life before possessing the Ring is not fully explained in Tolkien"s works, but he is believed to have lived on fish, goblins, and other creatures of the mountains. Gollum is a cunning and sly creature, and is often seen as a tragic figure due to the corruption of the Ring.
