The character was created by writer Chris Claremont and artist John Byrne, first appearing in X-Men #1 (October 1991). Kitty is a mutant with the ability to phase through solid objects. She is a member of the X-Men, and has been a leader of the team, as well as a member of the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy. She is a strong-willed, intelligent, and independent young woman who is a capable leader and fighter. She is also a good friend and mentor to many of the younger X-Men, and is often seen as a big sister figure to them. She is also known for her long-standing relationship with fellow X-Man Colossus.
