Thanos 16 Thanos is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He was created by writer Mike Friedrich and writer-artist Jim Starlin, and first appeared in Iron Man #55 (cover dated Feb. 1973). Thanos is one of the most powerful villains in the Marvel Universe and has clashed with many heroes including the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. Thanos is an Eternal–a type of superhuman being descended from the original inhabitants of the planet Titan–who possesses powers common to the Eternals, but amplified to a higher degree through a combination of his mutant–Eternal heritage, bionic amplification, mysticism, and power bestowed by the abstract entity, Death. Demonstrating enormous superhuman strength, stamina, and durability, Thanos can absorb and project vast quantities of cosmic energy and is capable of telekinesis, telepathy and matter manipulation. Thanos is also an accomplished hand-to-hand combatant, having been trained in the art of war on Titan. Thanos is infamously known for his obsession with death and for wielding the Infinity Gauntlet, which gives him god-like control over the universe when it is outfitted with the six Infinity Stones. His plans for the universe have included the annihilation of half the universe"s life forms, the transformation of Earth into a haven for his nihilistic followers, and the ultimate destruction of the universe itself.
