Potos in Bolivia 1 Potosí is a city in the south of Bolivia, and the capital of the Potosí Department. It is one of the highest cities in the world, at an elevation of 4,090 meters (13,420 ft). It is located in the Bolivian Altiplano, near the Cordillera de los Frailes mountain range. The city was founded in 1545 as a mining town, and quickly became one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the Americas due to the discovery of the Cerro Rico silver mines. The city is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is home to many historical sites, including the Casa de la Moneda, the colonial-era mint. The city is also known for its traditional dishes, such as llama stew and chicharrón.
