The town is located at an elevation of 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) above sea level, and is situated at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers. Punakha was the capital of Bhutan until 1955, and it remains the winter seat of the Je Khenpo, the head of the Central Monastic Body. The Punakha Dzong, an impressive fortress located at the confluence of the two rivers, is one of the most iconic landmarks in the country.
