The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Germany were Celts, who arrived in the region around 500 BC. During the first century AD, the Roman Empire conquered much of the region, and Germanic tribes began to settle in the area. The Franks, a Germanic tribe, eventually established the Carolingian Empire, which was the first major political entity in the region. During the Middle Ages, Germany was divided into a number of smaller states, each with its own ruler. This period saw the rise of the powerful Habsburg dynasty, which ruled much of the region for centuries. In the late 18th century, the German states were unified into a single nation, and the German Empire was established. The 20th century saw two world wars and the division of Germany into East and West. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the country was reunified and the modern Federal Republic of Germany was established. Today, Germany is a major economic power and one of the leading nations in Europe.
