Rodez in France 2 Rodez is a commune in the Aveyron department in the Occitanie region of southern France. It is the prefecture of the department and lies about 150 km northeast of Toulouse. Rodez is the seat of the Communauté d"agglomération du Grand Rodez, of the First Constituency of Aveyron as well as of the general Council of Aveyron. The town dates back to the Upper Paleolithic and the Gallo-Roman period. It was then known as Rhodanus and later Rhodès. In the Middle Ages, it was the chief town of the Rouergue and the county seat of the Counts of Rodez. It was then a Viscounty before it was raised to a countship in 1560. The town was briefly occupied by the Protestants in 1579. The name was changed to Rodez in 1790 during the French Revolution. The town is known for its Gothic cathedral, the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rodez, which dates from the 13th century. It also has a museum, the Musée Fenaille, which displays prehistoric and Gallo-Roman artifacts. The town is also known for its annual carnival, the Fête de la Madeleine, which takes place in July.
