It is the oldest cathedral in Denmark and the most important example of Danish brick Gothic architecture. The cathedral was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and was the first Gothic cathedral to be built of brick. It was the first Danish cathedral to be built in the Gothic style and is the burial site of the Danish monarchs from the 15th century onwards. The cathedral has a long and varied history, having been destroyed by fire in the 16th century and rebuilt in the 17th century. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major tourist attraction in Denmark.
