It is situated on the Fulda River, approx. 20 km east of Kassel. It has a population of around 22,000. The town is known for its half-timbered houses and the nearby castle of Rotenburg. It is also the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm, who wrote many of their famous fairy tales here. The town is home to a number of museums, including the Brothers Grimm Museum, the Museum of Local History, and the Museum of the Fulda Valley.
