Saintes in France 3 Saintes is a commune in the Charente-Maritime department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in southwestern France. It is the capital of the Saintonge historical province. It is located on the banks of the Charente River, about 100 km (62 mi) upstream from the Atlantic Ocean. Saintes is the second-largest city in Charente-Maritime, with a population of 32,132 in the city proper and 50,072 in the metropolitan area. The city is built on the site of the ancient Roman city of Mediolanum Santonum, which was the capital of the Santones, a tribe of Gauls. It was the site of a major battle in AD 732 between the Franks and the Aquitanians. The city has a rich history, with many monuments, churches, and museums.
