MAY THIRD 1808. 1 On May 3, 1808, the United States Congress passed a resolution recognizing the importance of religion in the nation"s history and calling for a day of national prayer and thanksgiving. The resolution declared: "That a day may be recommended to be observed by the people of the United States, with religious solemnity, as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness." The resolution was signed by President Thomas Jefferson, who was a strong believer in the separation of church and state. Despite this, he recognized the importance of religion in the nation"s history and felt that it was important to set aside a day for the nation to come together and give thanks to God.
