Abul-Abbas elephant famous animal 7 Abul-Abbas was an elephant gifted to Charlemagne by Harun al-Rashid, the Abbasid Caliph, in the year 797. He was a white elephant from the East, and was said to be so large that four oxen were needed to carry his food. He was a beloved pet of Charlemagne and his court, and he even appeared in the royal seal of Charlemagne. He was kept in the imperial menagerie at Aachen, and died in 810.
