She was born in 1971 and lived at the Gorilla Foundation in California. Coco was taught sign language by Dr. Francine Patterson and was able to use over 1,000 different signs to communicate with her caregivers. She became a beloved figure and ambassador for the conservation of gorillas and other endangered species. Coco passed away in 2018, but her legacy as a remarkable and intelligent animal lives on.
