Gelert mythology famous animal 4 Gelert is a legendary dog associated with the village of Beddgelert in North Wales. According to the legend, Gelert was a faithful companion of Llywelyn the Great, Prince of Gwynedd. One day, Llywelyn left Gelert to guard his infant son while he went hunting. When he returned, he found the baby"s cradle overturned and the room in disarray. Assuming that Gelert had killed the child, Llywelyn drew his sword and killed the dog. As he wept over Gelert"s body, he heard the infant"s cries coming from beneath the dog. He discovered that Gelert had killed a wolf that had threatened the baby"s life. Overcome with remorse, Llywelyn buried Gelert with great honors.
