Giganotosaurus 9 Giganotosaurus is a genus of theropod dinosaur that lived in what is now Argentina, during the early Cenomanian age of the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 99.6 to 97 million years ago. Here are nine facts about this fascinating creature: 1. Giganotosaurus is one of the largest known terrestrial carnivores, but the exact size has been hard to determine due to the incompleteness of the remains found so far. 2. The name Giganotosaurus means "giant southern lizard", derived from the Greek gigas/γίγας meaning "giant", notos/νότος meaning "south wind" and -saurus/-σαῦρος meaning "lizard". 3. The length of Giganotosaurus is estimated to have been around 12 to 13 meters (39 to 43 feet), and its weight is estimated at 4.2 to 13.8 tonnes (4.6 to 15.2 short tons). 4. Giganotosaurus had a large skull, measuring up to 1.95 meters (6.4 feet) in length, which was balanced by a long, powerful tail. 5. Its teeth were shorter and narrower than those of other large theropods like Tyrannosaurus, and were designed for slicing through flesh rather than crushing bone. 6. Giganotosaurus was a bipedal predator. As
