Pelorus Jack famous animal Pelorus Jack was a famous Risso"s dolphin that was known to guide ships through a particularly dangerous channel in New Zealand. He was first seen around 1888 and was last spotted in April 1912. Pelorus Jack became famous for escorting ships through the treacherous waters of Cook Strait, New Zealand. He was protected by a 1904 law, with the penalty for attempting to harm him being a £100 fine.
