Sergeant Stubby famous animal 1 Sergeant Stubby was a decorated World War I hero and the most decorated war dog of World War I. He was a stray terrier adopted by the 102nd Infantry Regiment of the 26th Yankee Division and served for 18 months and participated in 17 battles on the Western Front. He was wounded in action and was credited with finding and comforting wounded soldiers, as well as warning his unit of incoming artillery and gas attacks. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in recognition of his service. After the war, he became a celebrity and was awarded a gold medal and several other honors.
