The Medici Giraffe famous animal 6 The Medici Giraffe was a female giraffe given to Lorenzo de" Medici in 1486 by the Sultan of Egypt. It was the first living giraffe to be seen in Italy since the days of Ancient Rome. The giraffe was a sensation and caused a great stir among the people of Florence. It was kept in a courtyard of the Palazzo Medici and was later moved to the Boboli Gardens. The Medici Giraffe died in 1516 and was buried in a special tomb near the Palazzo Vecchio.
