Developed by Relic Entertainment and published by THQ, it follows the events of the first expansion, Winter Assault. In Dark Crusade, the campaign mode represents a map of the planet Kronus. Each territory corresponds to a specific battlefield and offers specific benefits to the player who controls it. The player can choose to play as one of seven factions, each with their own unique units and strategies. The game introduces two new playable factions: the Tau Empire and the Necrons. The Tau are a technologically advanced race with powerful ranged units, while the Necrons are an ancient, undead species with incredibly durable units. The campaign can be played in a non-linear fashion, with the player choosing which territories to attack and in what order. This gives the player a great deal of strategic freedom and allows for a unique experience each time the game is played. The gameplay in Dark Crusade remains largely the same as in the previous games, with the player gathering resources, building bases, and commanding armies to defeat their enemies. However, the new factions add a new layer of strategy and variety to the game.
