The game is set in the fictional region of Rokkotsu Pass in the early 19th century, during the Boshin War period of Japanese history. The player takes the role of a rōnin, or masterless samurai, who is caught in the middle of a struggle between three factions: the pro-Imperial forces of the Aizu domain, the pro-Shogunate forces of the Jozai domain, and the neutral Shinsengumi. The player"s actions will determine the outcome of the conflict, as well as the fate of the region.
