Badlands 4 . Badlands is a 1973 American period crime drama film written and directed by Terrence Malick, starring Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek. The story, though fictional, is loosely based on the real-life murder spree of Charles Starkweather and his girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate, in 1958 Nebraska. The film follows two young lovers, Kit (Sheen) and Holly (Spacek), as they flee across the Midwest in an attempt to escape the law. Along the way, they commit a series of murders, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. The film was a critical and commercial success, and was nominated for two Academy Awards.
