The statue is a representation of the Buddhist goddess of mercy, Kannon, and is one of the tallest statues in the world. The statue was built in 1961 to commemorate the 1,250th anniversary of the birth of the founder of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism, Shinran Shonin. It is a popular tourist attraction and is illuminated at night.
