Somaliland Republic of The Somaliland Republic is an unrecognized self-declared sovereign state located in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Djibouti to the west, Ethiopia to the south, and Somalia to the east. Its capital and largest city is Hargeisa. The government of Somaliland considers itself the successor state to the former British Somaliland protectorate, which declared independence on 26 June 1960 as the State of Somaliland, but later united with the Trust Territory of Somalia (the former Italian Somaliland) to form the Somali Republic on 1 July 1960. The Somali National Movement (SNM) declared the region"s independence from Somalia as the Republic of Somaliland on 18 May 1991. Since then, it has maintained a de facto independence, though it is not recognized by any international state or organization.
