Before the Law Franz Kafka 1915 22 Before the Law is a short parable written by Franz Kafka in 1915. It is widely interpreted as an allegory about the essential predicament of humanity. In the story, a man from the country arrives at the entrance of a law court and asks to be allowed entry, but the doorkeeper tells him that he cannot be admitted at the moment. The man waits patiently for years, hoping that he will eventually be granted access, but the doorkeeper insists that he will only be allowed to enter when he has the proper permission. The story ends with the man still waiting at the entrance, and the doorkeeper closing the door.
