It was built from 1555 to 1561 on orders from Ivan the Terrible and commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan. The cathedral has nine churches arranged around a central church, each with its own distinct style of Russian Orthodox architecture. It is one of the most recognizable symbols of Russia and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
