Beloved Toni Morrison 1987 7 .8 Beloved is a 1987 novel by Nobel Prize-winning American author Toni Morrison. The novel, her fifth, is loosely based on the 1856 story of an African-American slave, Margaret Garner, who escaped slavery in Kentucky late January 1856 by fleeing to Ohio, a free state. In the novel, the protagonist Sethe is also a slave who escapes slavery, running to Cincinnati, Ohio. Sethe kills her daughter rather than allow her to be taken back into slavery. The story opens with an introduction to the ghost of Beloved and follows Sethe"s struggle to "keep and hold" her family together in the face of adversity. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1988 and was a finalist for the 1987 National Book Award.
